You must check-in at the Citation counter no later than 8:15 a.m. If you are late, you will be re-scheduled for the next session.

Traffic School

If you receive a moving violation and are cited into the Reno Justice Court, you may qualify to attend traffic school to avoid having demerit points reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles based upon the following criteria.

  • Your citation was issued for a violation in which the associated demerit points are 4 or less.
  • Your citation was issued for only 1 moving violation in which the associated demerit points are 4 or less.
  • Your citation does not involve an accident.
  • You have not been convicted of a moving violation within the past year.
  • You have not attended traffic school within the past year.

To request approval to attend traffic school, you can make your request with one of the following options:

  • Appear at the Reno Justice Court and complete the Traffic School Motion and make payment of the total amount due as stated on your citation on or before your arraignment date. (if you do not wish to appear before a Judge);
  • Complete the Traffic School Motion and mail (mailing address) the completed and signed form to the Reno Justice Court along with payment of the total amount due, as stated on your citation, on or before your arraignment date. Notification that your request has been granted or denied will be returned by mail. If granted, the notification will outline specific instructions and a due date.(if you do not wish to appear before a Judge);
  • Complete the Traffic School Motion and email the form. To email, be sure to complete all required fields, digitally sign the form (instructions), and submit by using the "Click Here to Email" button on the bottom of the form. Notification that your motion has been granted or denied will be returned by email. The notification will indicate specific instructions with a due date for the total amount due, as stated on your citation, and, if granted, a due date for the traffic school certificate. (if you do not wish to appear before a Judge);
  • Appear before a Judge of the Reno Justice Court at your arraignment date and time as stated on your citation. An appearance before a Judge does not guarantee that your request for traffic school will be granted. Traffic Court Information
Important - Failure to complete and have granted the Traffic School Motion prior to payment being processed will result in Traffic School being denied and demerit points being forwarded to DMV.

Appearing on a Citation

Citations are issued with an appearance date and time. If the citation is marked court mandatory or you wish to make an appearance, the arraignment date and time are indicated on the bottom of the citation, this is the date and time that you would need to appear.

You must check-in at the Citation counter no later than 8:15 am on the date indicated on your citation. Upon checking in you will be directed to the appropriate courtroom.

Failing to check-in on time will result in you being unable to make an appearance.

Enter a Not Guilty Plea

If you wish to plead Not Guilty and contest the charges on your citation, you will need to appear at the arraignment date and time as indicated on your citation to enter a “Not Guilty Plea.”

Your case will then be set for a Pre-Trial Conference with a Deputy District Attorney and/or a Trial before a Judge of the Reno Justice Court at a future date.

Trial by Declaration is not an option in the Reno Justice Court.

Warrants

If you have an existing warrant, contact the Citation Division at 775-325-6503 to resolve your warrant. The following options are available for resolving an outstanding warrant on a citation matter at the Reno Justice Court.

Important - With an active warrant, you are subject to arrest 24 hours a day.

Option 1 - Warrant Resolution Program

The Warrant Resolution Program allows a payment plan on eligible warranted citations without an appearance before the Judge of the Court based upon the following criteria:

  • If it is the first warrant issued on a citation.
  • If a mandatory appearance is not required on the citation.

Option 2 - Payment in Full

Payment in full for the amount of the warrant based upon the following criteria:

  • If a mandatory appearance is not required on the citation.

Option 3 - Court Appearance

Check in by 8:15 am Monday through Friday to appear before a Judge of the Court.

Continuances

The law enforcement agency issues an appearance date and time when the citation is issued. If you wish to make an appearance on your citation or if your citation is marked court mandatory you must appear on the date and time that is issued on your citation. No continuance of this date will be granted.

Do I Have to Appear in Court?

The citation may just be paid in instances where a mandatory appearance is not required.

If you have been cited for a violation which requires a mandatory appearance your citation will be marked as such. Failure to appear as indicated on your citation may result in a warrant being issued for your arrest and a hold being placed on your driver's license. Mandatory appearance citations cannot be paid without first appearing in court.

Payment Methods for Citation Matters

There are several options available for making your payments. Payments via phone are not accepted at this time.

Important - You must appear at the Reno Justice Court if your citation is marked Court Mandatory for arraignment on the date and time listed on your citation. All other citations may be paid in full on or before your scheduled court date. The court assumes that you are waiving your right to a hearing before a judge and admitting guilt by choosing to pay your citation.

Option 1 - Online

Payments may be made online at justicecourts.washoecounty.us.

  • Online payments may be made via Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.
  • Online Credit Card processing includes a $5.00 processing fee.
  • For proper processing to your citation the citation number and/or full name as stated on the citation is required to process online payments.

* - Checks will only be accepted on cases that do no have active warrants.

Option 2 - In Person

Payments may be made in person at the Reno Justice Court from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • In-person payments may be made via cash, check*, cashier’s check, money order, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.
  • Credit Card processing is provided by Govpay which includes a 3.5% processing fee.
  • For proper processing to your citation the citation number and/or full name as stated on the citation is required.

* - Checks will only be accepted on cases that do no have active warrants.
