Disaster and Emergency Response

Washoe County plans and prepares for 13 different types of hazards that range from earthquakes to wildfires.  Regional Animal Services wants you to be prepared for an emergency by preparing in advance.  The best way to protect your family pets is to incorporate them into your disaster plan.  Depending on the nature of the emergency, you may need to evacuate your home so WCRAS recommends preparing a “Go Kit” for your pet.  Learn more about preparing your household and your pets for an emergency at www.ready.gov/animals

WCRAS is prepared to respond to most disasters within our area.  WCRAS staff is trained to protect the health and safety of the public and to provide care and shelter for evacuated animals.   Staff practice regular mock emergency drills to prepare for a variety of circumstances that may arise during these critical times.   The department is equipped with 2 mobile units containing equipment that can shelter up to 450 small animals.  The department also has livestock trailers and emergency sheltering locations set up for large animal evacuation and sheltering.
