Formal education:
I attended Memphis State University and the transferred to Henderson State College. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Political Science and a minor in History from Henderson State. I then attended the University of North Dakota School of Law where I received a Juris Doctor Degree.
Current occupation:
I am currently in the private practice of law on a limited basis.
Government background:
I was the elected Reno City Attorney from 2006-2014 after which I chose not to run for a third term. I have also been an elected Justice of the Peace (now called the Reno Justice Court) for 16 years. Additionally I have been a Deputy District Attorney in Elko, Pershing and Washoe Counties.
Reason for seeking position:
During the 8 years I served as Reno City Attorney, the Civil Division had a 95% success rate in civil litigation and administrative hearings involving the City of Reno. The Criminal Division was able to expand prosecutorial services to the Airport Authority, the University of Nevada and other agencies. The Risk Division provided effective claims management and insurance policy reviews. The insurance policy reviews resulted in reduced renewal insurance costs for several fiscal years. During the downturn that occurred in 2007, the Office budget and staff were reduced by 30%. Despite the reduction, the Office was able to provide exceptional legal service during that time. The City of Reno is growing and needs to have good legal advise from their City Attorney. I have the integrity, competence and experience to provide the legal services that the City of Reno needs now more then ever.
