Lawrence R. "Larry" Burtness
Lawrence R. "Larry" Burtness was elected as Washoe County Recorder in November 2014, after being appointed to the position in March 2013. Prior to that, he served for 11 years as Chief Deputy Recorder. With 40 years of experience in the private and public sectors working for and with county recorders, title companies, records managers, and the public, he brings experience, expertise and a balanced approach to the Office of the Washoe County Recorder.
Larry serves on the executive boards of the Property Records Industry Association (PRIA), and the International Association of Government Officials (iGO), and currently serves as iGO President. Through his involvement with PRIA, Larry has co-authored a variety of white papers and best practices on electronic recording and records preservation and has made presentations to national audiences. To this end, Larry comments "Utilizing today's technologies while being very respectful of the records in our office dating back to 1855 is not only a wonderful challenge but also a passionate commitment that I take seriously on behalf of the citizens of Washoe County."
Additionally, Larry is a member of Nevada's County Fiscal Officers Association and the Recorder's Association of Nevada. He has participated in Nevada State Legislative Sessions since in 2003 and has testified before Legislative Committees on issues of concern to Nevada's County Recorders.
Larry is a dedicated husband to Michelle, his wife of 26 years, and a devoted father to their three children. His hobbies include skiing, fly fishing and backpacking.
