Fall color at the May Arboretum The Wilbur D. May Arboretum & Botanical Garden is a unique showplace for plants and wildlife living in the transition zone between the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the Great Basin Desert. Established  in 1983, it is home to over 4,000 plant species. The garden houses 85 genera, both native and non-native, and encompasses nearly 23 acres. Funded by a generous grant from the Wilbur May Foundation, the Arboretum is lasting tribute to the memory of philanthropist Wilbur D. May. The Arboretum is owned and operated by Washoe County and continues to receive funding from the May Foundation, as well as other supporters such as the May Arboretum Society and private donations from the community.
