Reno, Nev. May 4, 2020. The Washoe County Human Services Agency (HSA) Senior Services Division, along with the cities of Reno and Sparks, encourage the community to join us in recognizing May as Older Americans Month.

HSA served more than 5,000 seniors in need of support, resources and referrals to community- based programs and case management during Fiscal Year 2019.

When the COVID-19 outbreak concludes and health officials say it is safe to do so, HSA promotes the importance of taking part in activities, avoiding isolation, and encouraging the elderly to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle.

Due to COVID-19 concerns in our community, Washoe County is canceling all Older Americans Month 2020 programs and activities. However, home delivered and takeout meals for seniors will not be impacted.

“We apologize for any inconvenience, but the health of Washoe County’s elderly is priority during this trying time,” said HSA Director Amber Howell. “We know this is a difficult spring for our elderly population, but we want them to know we appreciate their valuable contributions over the years to help make Washoe County one of the best places to live, work and play.”

Seniors that must go out for groceries, gas, medications, or any other reason necessary should do the following:

  • Remain at least 6 feet from another person in public.
  • Stay away from anyone who is sick or exhibiting signs of illness.
  • Cough or sneeze in sleeve.
  • Recommend wearing a mask.

For more information about COVID-19, please head to the Regional Information Center’s website.

Watch video message for seniors, which includes social distancing guidelines.

Older Americans Month is possible, in part, by Regional Transportation Commission, Washoe County and the Cities of Reno and Sparks Senior Advisory Boards.
