The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office has secured a guilty verdict in a case against a registered sex offender who failed to register in accordance with Nevada law. The defendant faces up to 5 years in prison as a result of the conviction and sentencing is set for 9:00 a.m. on July 24, 2018 in Department 3 of Washoe County District Court.
Armando Jauregui, 44, from Reno was found guilty after a three day trial of one count of Fail to Obey Laws Regulations Regarding Registration of Sex Offender, Second or Subsequent Offense (Felony). Jauregui was convicted in 2001 of Attempted Sexual Assault and sentenced to a maximum of over 12 ½ years in prison, as well as subject to lifetime supervision as a sex offender. Jauregui was released on parole in 2008, and since that time has been charged and convicted of sex offender registry violations on multiple occasions. Jauregui served terms in jail or prison for those violations, and was most recently released after having served two consecutive 364 day jail terms in January, 2017.
The investigation into this case began on August 16, 2017 after the defendant’s wife notified his supervising officer with the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation – Sex Offender Unit that she had been granted a Temporary Protection Order (TPO) against the defendant on August 20, 2017 and had kicked him out of her residence. Detectives in the Regional Sex Offender Notification Unit, as well as officers with the Division of Parole and Probation attempted to locate Jauregui with no success until March, 2018 when he was arrested by the Reno Police Department for separate charges and booked into the Washoe County Jail. This office filed a felony registration violation charge against Jauregui as he had failed to notify law enforcement of his change of address following issuance of the TPO as required by law. Due to Jauregui’s multiple prior registration violations, he faces mandatory prison as a result of the jury’s verdict.
