As wildfires ravage California, Truckee Meadows Fire is piloting a program to dispose of defensible space waste in lieu of fall pile burning.
Reno, Nevada. Oct. 20, 2017. Truckee Meadows Fire announces a pilot effort aimed at providing Washoe County residents with safe and environmentally friendly alternatives to open pile burning this fall.
Residents will have two dates in the coming weeks to dispose of lawn waste and dead vegetation at four Truckee Meadows Fire Stations. This project provides for environmentally friendly disposal of excess vegetation for residents who safeguard their property by maintaining defensible space around homes.
“This past spring TMFPD had over 30 permissible days for open burning, and even with the record moisture we received, we still responded to 12 fires that were the result of escaped residential pile burns,” Fire Chief Charlie Moore said. “Given our dry fall conditions and heavy fuel loads, I asked my team to develop alternative options to pile burning that would provide our residents with an opportunity to safely dispose of their defensible space waste no matter the weather conditions. Disposing of vegetative waste is an important step for fire safety, and I am proud that Truckee Meadows Fire is piloting this green waste disposal program.”
The TMFPD Defensible Space Waste Disposal Program is available to Washoe County residents with proof of residency. The collection sites will accept residential lawn waste, leaves and dead vegetation on Oct. 28 and Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days. Examples of items that cannot be accepted include food, household garbage, construction materials, e-waste, appliances, tires, paint, furniture, batteries or any hazardous materials. Additional details on the program are available here.
