Library Director Presents Annual Report
The report was presented at a joint meeting of the Board of County Commissioners and Library Board of Trustees.

In a joint meeting held today, both the Washoe County Library Board of Trustees and Board of County Commissioners acknowledged the presentation by Library Director, Jeff Scott, on the Washoe County Library Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2015-2016.   During the presentation, Director Scott highlighted some of the library’s accomplishments last fiscal year that included expanded library hours, and increased check outs at 1.6 million checkouts.  According to Director Scott, “If Washoe County citizens had to pay for each book checked out, it would cost the community $40,000,000.”

Library Director Jeff Scott Presenting Annual Report

Under the leadership of Director Scott the library system has also expanded programming opportunities and added more funding for children’s materials.  Several programs highlighted included the launch of  the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten project geared towards early childhood literacy, and Makerspace. The library’s Studio775 makerspaces are creative, DIY spaces where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. They are a fairly new phenomenon, but are beginning to produce projects with significant impacts.  Director Scott stated “Washoe County Library System is needed now more than ever. With Early Literacy and Makerspaces such a large need in the community and in the state, Washoe County Library System is here to help. We save the community money and provide critical resources where our community needs us most. Our Annual Report reflects these efforts. “

During the presentation Director Scott thanked the Library Board of Trustees, the Commission, the community, and the Friends of Washoe County Library for their continued support. There are current fundraising projects underway to help support much needed improvements and programs focused on early literacy, including a joint effort with the Reno Bighorns for a library night on December 1, 2016.
