Early June Special Library Programs
From authors and Summer Reading to STEM and STEAM programs, there is something for everyone.

Wednesday, June 1 

Downtown Reno Library               301 S. Center St., Reno                                775-327-8300

• 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Basic Computer Class. In this 8-week introduction to computers, learn how to use a mouse, navigate the internet, and send an email. Each class builds on skills learned in previous classes. Therefore, it is strongly recommended for students to attend each class. Reservations only, reserve your seat by calling  327-8312.

• 10 - 11 a.m. Tech Café. Trouble with your mobile device? Not sure how to make use of it? Join us at a Tech Café for advice and assistance harnessing the power of your tablet,  smartphone, or laptop. With your library card, you can also learn how  to access over 7,000 downloadable e-books, audiobooks, magazine articles, language learning, and small business/company research. Bring your device and your questions!

• 4 - 6 p.m. Lego StoryStarter/ Minecraft. Come and play Minecraft with others in the library’s own Minecraft world. Use the Lego StoryStarter packs to create a scene then use StoryVisualizer software to create a storyboard and tell the story.

• 1 p.m. Terri Farley presents What it Means to be a Mustang.  This highly visual presentation is based on Terri's non-fiction book WILD AT HEART: Mustangs and the Young People Fighting to Save Them. It explores the impact of modern science on the history, social structure and current events surrounding wild horses. Research by respected scientists, Terri's own eyewitness observations and photographs by Pulitzer Prize winning, National Geographic photojournalist Melissa Farlow create a you-are-there experience for all ages. By arrangement, this presentation may include both Melissa Farlow and Terri Farley who can present to large groups and provide hands-on workshops in narrative nonfiction, photojournalism, creative writing and photo fun with cell phone cameras.
• 2 p.m. Summer Reading Program Kick-off Party.  Join us for fun and games to kick off SRP 2016.

• 11 a.m. - Noon  Stay ‘n Play.  Stay after story time and play with toys, dance to music or visit with new friends you’ve made at the library!

• 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.  Family Game Night.  Northwest Reno Library invites families to Family Game Night! Not only does game playing bring all ages of family members together, but research shows that participation in board games helps build  critical thinking skills in children. According to the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) objectives, board games encourage math and problem solving skills, deduction and reasoning skills, strategy building      skills and  often apply kinetics skills as well. So come into the library, find a table, grab a game, and have some fun.

• 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.  Paws 2 Read.  Reading program for children of all ages proudly presented by Paws 4 Love. Each month Paws 4 Love therapy teams visit participating libraries where friendly dogs lend a loving, non-judgmental ear to beginning readers.  After reading to a gentle dog; children receive a free book to  keep.
• 1 - 2 p.m.  So You Want to  Have a Pet Snake…? OK - maybe Olaf would never want one… However, in the event you are considering having a snake you will want to hear what the experts from Great Basin Herpetological Society have to say.  Not only will they give an introduction to reptiles as pets, they will also talk about the conservation of our native species.
• 2 - 4 p.m.  Summer Reading Program Kick-Off Party.  Join us  for an afternoon of games, raffles and prizes to kick off the Summer Reading Program!
