Reno, Nevada. May 16, 2016. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District is teaming up with several local partners for Junk the Junipers on Saturday, May 21, 2016, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This is the public’s chance to prepare and hopefully prevent a wildfire by bringing ornamental junipers and other hazardous wildfire fuels to the lot adjacent to the Truckee Meadows Fire Station at Silver Lake 11525 Red Rock Rd., for free chipping. Ornamental Junipers are highly flammable and should not be used within 30-feet of a house or other structures.

“The best way for people to protect their homes is to create survivable space by getting rid of the dead and dying vegetation from their properties so that approaching fires burn around the home and not into it,” TMFPD Fire Chief Charlie Moore said.

Moana Nursery, Bureau of Land Management, Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension are partnering up for the event.
