Mental Health Services
Mental Health Services are provided to youth that are housed at Wittenberg Hall. All youth, regardless of their mental health status, are provided the opportunity to speak with a Mental Health Counselor upon request. The counselor is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. For those youth with special needs, a meeting is scheduled weekly to plan and coordinate services for that individual youth. Parents are encouraged to call Paula Berry at 325-7902 if they have concerns for their child while in detention.
Detained youth receive a mental health screening (MAYSI) during the booking portion of their intake. The screening may trigger the need for further clinical evaluation, which is provided by a licensed practioner. This evaluation assists staff in determining the level of safety precautions needed by and individual youth while in secure detention.
Through a partnership grant with the Reno Rodeo Foundation Juvenile Services was able to obtain Lucy, our therapy dog. Lucy came to us as a highly trained canine from Great Plains Dogs located in North Dakota. It is a well known fact that pets can be an important part of a child's life. Lucy was specifically trained to work with youth in a detention setting, and became a great addition to our Juvenile Services Staff. While Lucy has passed away, her memories will be with the department forever.
