Golden Valley Aquifer Recharge Program
Washoe County administers the Golden Valley Aquifer Recharge Program to address declining water levels and water quality issues in the Golden Valley hydrobasin. Surface water is injected into groundwater in order to stabilize declining groundwater levels in the Golden Valley aquifer. Washoe County owns four injection wells as well as monitoring wells, valves, and mains related to the facilities.
The aquifer is relied upon by Golden Valley residents as their primary water source for domestic wells. The program has been in place since 2002 and is funded through fees under Washoe County Ordinance 1548.
On December 9, 2014, the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) approved an Interlocal agreement between Washoe County and Truckee Meadows Water Authority that designates Washoe County as the administrator of the program and TMWA as the agency to provide operations and maintenance services. More information is contained in the BCC's staff report.
