Step 2. YOUR NEW NAME(S)

Nevada allows either party to keep your existing name or choose from many possibilities.

PROVIDING YOUR NAME DESIGNATION TO OUR OFFICE WHEN OBTAINING YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE DOES NOT LEGALLY CHANGE YOUR NAME. You must still go through the process at the Social Security and DMV offices to complete your name change (see steps 3-4).

IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHAT NAME YOU'D LIKE TO USE, DO NOT DESIGNATE IT ON YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE. . If you change your mind later it could cause complications for you at Social Security and DMV.

MIDDLE NAME - Keep your current name or choose one of the following:

  1. The current last name of the other applicant.
  2. The last name of either applicant given at birth.
  3. A hyphenated combination of the current middle name and the current last name of either applicant.
  4. A hyphenated combination of the current middle name and the last name given at birth of either applicant.

LAST NAME - Keep your current name or choose one of the following:

  1. The current last name of the other applicant.
  2. The last name of either applicant given at birth.
  3. A hyphenated combination of the potential last names described above.

If you wish to use your birth name, your proof of name in Step 1 must contain that name or you must present a birth certificate or other proof of your birth name.

After Ceremony

Step 3. SOCIAL SECURITY

You must notify the Social Security Administration of your name change if you have a Social Security number.

  • US citizens must present the Marriage Certificate and a US driver's license/ID card or a passport.
  • Social Security accepts some alternate ID documents and may ask for additional documentation.
  • Noncitizens must present the Marriage Certificate, proof of immigration status and proof of work eligibility.

Visit ssa.gov or call (800) 772-1213.

Step 4. DRIVER'S LICENSE

Change your name with Social Security first. The Nevada requirements are listed here. Other states are similar.
At a minimum, you must present:

  • Your existing driver's license or ID card
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Social Security card with your new name

Optional: Get a Real ID.
You may wish to upgrade to a Real ID if you have not already done so. Visit http://www.dmvnv.com/realid or call (775) 684-4368. In addition to the documents above, you will have to show the following to obtain a Real ID driver's license:

  • US birth certificate
  • Passport
  • Immigration documents
  • Two documents to prove your residential address

Step 5. US PASSPORT

Change your name with Social Security and on your driver's license or other ID first. In most cases, a certified Marriage Certificate and government- issued identification in the married name will suffice. Additional documentation may be required.
