Winter 2021 Commission Newsletter

Greetings from Washoe County Chairman, Bob Lucey

Happy 2021 to all of our Washoe County residents. As we welcome in the new year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the difficult year we had as a region in 2020, and hope for a healthier year with a return to seeing our vibrant businesses and events begin to come back. I will be there, alongside many of you, whenever it’s safe and possible to do so. We would like to remind everyone that our Chambers are open, and the board meets on Tuesdays throughout the month. The public is invited to participate in a number of ways. Please read below on all the ways to connect with us, including virtually or in person.

We have a lot to celebrate together, and in this edition of the Washoe County Commissioner Connection, you will find the latest information on the region’s COVID19 vaccine rollout, the new makeup of the County Commission, and some of the top requests we’ve been receiving from you, our citizens.

Speaking of those requests, did you know Washoe311 is the front line to our citizens, and they answer requests from all 5 districts and send us reports that include trends, questions and feedback for the Commission? Washoe311 is one of the best ways to get the info you are looking for and you can simply dial 3-1-1 or send us an email Washoe311@washoecounty.us.

Earlier this month Commissioners participated in a strategic planning workshop, which was a very interactive session with the County Manager and staff and included future planning on the direction of Washoe County. We will also be hosting a discussion of  our legislative priorities heading into the 81st session of the Nevada Legislature at a future meeting.

On behalf of my fellow Commissioners I can tell you that we are looking forward to a tremendous amount of progress in 2021.

Stay tuned and stay informed!

Bob Lucey

More About The Board

At the Board’s first regular meeting, commissioners were delegated to serve on dozens of boards throughout the county, ranging from health to tourism to natural resources. Their board appointments can be found on their profiles on the Washoe County website.

The Board is the governing body for the five districts of Washoe County, covering 6,600 square miles and a population of just over 471,000 residents. Commissioners work in concert with other jurisdictions, including the City of Reno and City of Sparks, and while the names are similar, the Board does not oversee the Washoe County School District or the Washoe County Health District. They each have their own governing body composed of elected and appointed members. Learn more about what Washoe County does and does not do here.

The Washoe County Board of County Commissioners holds public meetings on the second, third, and fourth Tuesday of each month, and agendas are posted here. Members of the public are welcome to submit comment via voicemail (775) 954-4664, email, live video, or in-person. (Links to live video are provided on each agenda found here) Security personnel will take attendees’ temperatures at the door and limit admittance to ensure safe social distancing. Those waiting to enter will not be allowed to congregate indoors.

Meet Commissioner Alexis Hill

The New Year brings with it a new makeup of the Board of County Commissioners. Commissioner Alexis Hill was elected to represent District 1, which includes portions of the northwest and southwest Truckee Meadows, extending south along the eastern Sierra to include Incline Village and Crystal Bay.
