The Sierra Fire Protection District provides full service emergency services for the communities of Verdi, Galena and West Washoe Valley as well as Anderson Acres and the west side of the Cold Springs Valley.  The Sierra Fire Protection District has staffed three full time Stations providing emergency services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  The District is also served by five Volunteer Fire Departments who assist the career personnel throughout the District.

Fire Protection:

Each career Station maintains a full compliment of apparatus to provide initial attack on all fire incidents.  Each station has a Type 1 structure engine, a Type 3 wildland engine and a water tender.  All personnel train regularly to maintain the highest level of training possible for fire suppression.   The District has a Fire Prevention Bureau that conducts business inspections, reviews construction plans and provides public education programs.  The prevention staff is augmented by fire personnel who assist in public education and prevention program delivery.  The Prevention personnel also conduct fire cause determination investigations on all major fires within the District.

Emergency Medical Service:

Our goal is to provide the highest level of field emergency medicine to the residents and visitors of West Washoe County .  The Sierra Fire Protection District staffs two Engine Companies ( Galena and Bowers) with Paramedics who provide Advanced Life Support for all medical emergencies.  In addition to the paramedics, all station personnel are trained to the Intermediate Life Support level of Emergency Medical Technician.  The Sierra Fire Protection District provides the initial life saving, treatment, and stabilization necessary for patients being transport to medical facilities by REMSA or Careflight.

Specialized Training:

The Sierra Fire Protection District carries the "Jaws of Life" Hurst tools on all of the Type I structure engines for use in the extrication of patients in serious vehicle accidents. All District personnel are also trained in high and low angle rescue, swift water rescue and Hazardous Materials incidents.  The Sierra Fire Protection District receives assistance from the Reno Fire Department and Incline Fire to ensure that the highest level of expertise is provided on all technical incidents.

Fuels Management:

The Sierra Fire Protection District has an active fuels management program designed to minimize the wildland fire threat to our customers (the residents) in our District.  The District, though public education, works with individual homeowners to ensure that the recommended 30 foot clearance for defensible space around structures is accomplished.  Please feel free to ask for a free courtesy property inspection to learn more about defensible space. The Sierra Fire Protection District also maintains a fuels management crew that works closely with the Nevada Division of Forestry, Nevada Fire Safe Council, Washoe County Parks and various homeowner and neighborhood groups to perform fuels modification projects to lessen the risk of fire in the vegetated areas of the District.  Through trimming and clearing of vegetation, the fuel ladder is broken, slowing down wildland fires spread to structures.  All fuels management projects are conducted using fuels management plans and accepted practices.
