Low-income veterans or their survivors may be eligible for money from the V. A. even though they do not have any service connected injuries. They must be over the age of 65 or disabled in order to receive these benefits. In order to qualify, the veteran must have served 90 days in the military with at least one of those days being during a period of war. That does not mean that a veteran had to be in combat, he or she just needed to have served while there was a war in progress. Veterans who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or as a commissioned officer of the Public Health Service, the Environmental Science Services Administration or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or its predecessor organization, the Coast and Geodetic Survey, may be eligible. The veteran must have received a discharge under other than dishonorable conditions.
For more information, contact the Veterans Benefit Administration at 1 800 827-1000 or visit the office at 1201 Terminal Way in Reno and ask about the Pension Benefit Program.
