An exhibit by the Sierra Watercolor Society will be displayed in the museum's May Gallery from July 21, 2011 through August 24, 2011. Titled “The Power of Plants,” the exhibit features painting of florals, plants, still lifes, garden scenes and landscapes by area artists.

A series of free summer evening concerts starts at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Washoe County’s Lazy 5 Regional Park in Spanish Springs. Every Wednesday evening from July 6 through August 31, the park offers free concerts showcasing local bands and a variety of musical styles.

The multi-use pasture that is used as a popular off-leash area in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park will be closed from 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. this Thursday, June 16 to allow for weed abatement by Washoe County’s Department of Regional Parks and Open Space.

Washoe County’s Discovery Room Volunteers will open the park’s Discovery Room from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays beginning June 15 through the end of August. Volunteers plan to pick different themes, ranging from dinosaurs to pioneers, for each week. Activities include “Crafts on the Porch” every Wednesday, and a story time at 11:00 a.m. on Fridays.

The Wild Women Artists have returned to the Wilbur D. May Museum. These extraordinary local artists are planning a big weekend at the museum when they host their annual Reno exhibit and sale October 22 through 24, 2010. Weekend highlights include the popular Meet the Artist Opening Night Reception from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22 and Underwood Children’s Story Hour with Kathleen Durham at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 23.

Construction of the long-awaited Rim to Reno Trail System gets underway at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16 at the Mt. Rose Trailhead near the summit of the Mt. Rose Highway.

Washoe County’s Department of Regional Parks and Open Space announced this morning that the Huffaker Hills Trailhead located on Alexander Lake Road near Rattlesnake Mountain will be closed for public use until 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2010. The closure is for the safety of the public, and to allow fire crews the opportunity for clean up and investigation in the aftermath of the Alexander Fire that burned through the area on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Explorers of all ages are welcome. Bring sturdy shoes, water, and an extra layer of clothing for the cooler evenings. All hikes are free.

The Galena Creek Visitor Center and Recreation Area is located at 18250 Mt. Rose Highway and is an important new resource for travelers along the Mt. Rose Highway as well visitors to the Galena Creek Recreation Area. It is also the new north entrance to Galena Creek Regional Park.

New Regional Shooting Range hours effective July 30, 2010 are Friday through Monday: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. CLOSED 12:00 – 12:30 p.m.

The Rancho San Rafael Botanical Society will donate $10,000 to Washoe County’s Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden thanks to the success of this year’s plant sale. Proceeds from the sale will be used to support general operations, capital improvements, maintenance, supplies and seasonal employment at the arboretum.

Celebrate National Trails Day by helping to build a new nature trail in Washoe County’s Galena Creek Regional Park on Saturday, June 7.

Volunteers will work on an interpretive trail from the new Visitor’s Center construction area to the Jones-White’s Loop trail and the site of a historic stage coach stop. All ages are encouraged to attend and no prior experience is necessary, the Nevada Conservation Crops will provide on site trail-building instruction.

All volunteers receive a free lunch with beverages and a chance to win raffle prizes from National Trail Day 2008 sponsors.

Clothing curator presents free public program on the Reno tailor who changed fashion history

Families looking to spend some time “playing in the dirt” are needed to help plant this year’s crop in Bartley Ranch Regional Park’s five-acre field as part of the park’s Planting Day from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20.

Twenty-first century families enjoy a rare glimpse into the life of a Civil War soldier and his family when they tour the Bowers Mansion on Saturday, May 20. Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in the mansion decked out in period dress and spirit, performing Civil War era music in the parlor and talking with mansion visitors about their life and times of a Civil War Soldier and his family.

Washoe County’s Department of Regional Parks and Open Space is now accepting applications for seasonal jobs, including park rangers, lifeguards, recreation leaders and maintenance workers.

Citing their desire to explore all options in an effort to resolve the Ballardini Ranch acquisition, Washoe County Commissioners voted today to postpone moving forward on the sale of $35 million in general obligation, 30-year bonds to be used to acquire the environmentally sensitive property. The vote was 4-1, with Commissioner Bonnie Weber dissenting.
