Silver Buffaloberry
| Shepherdia
argentea Elaeagnaceae family |

|
| This
shrub grows up to 5-6 feet tall (or even bigger) with spine-tipped branches and
1-inch leaves which have a silver tint to the tops and bottoms. The females bear
bright red or orange berries, which are edible but not everybody's favorite
trail snack. When you eat one of these berries, there is a brief sweetness followed by a bitter flavor. Cooking with large amounts of sugar improves the taste which works for making jams and jellies. Berries are crushed and brewed in tea, making a liquid soap, which is also drunk to relieve constipation. |
