Defendant Sentenced in Murder Case
Connected to 2022 Shooting

A 19-year-old Reno man has been sentenced to an aggregate 40 years in prison with parole eligibility after 15 years, in connection to a 2022 homicide. Kamahri Berreman (dob 1/15/04) had previously pled guilty to Second Degree Murder with the Use of a Deadly Weapon.

The case against Berreman began in March of last year after Reno Police responded to a report of a fatal shooting at a local convenience store. The victim, 28-year-old Eliazer Obed, was found unresponsive at the scene. Another victim, a young woman, was treated at Renown for a gunshot wound to her shoulder. The woman told law enforcement she had been at a party at a home on Plumas St. prior to going to the convenience store, and that a separate shooting occurred at the party before the shooting at the shop.

During the investigation, it was determined that Berreman drove two gang members to the area of the convenience store to target the rival gang from the house party earlier that night.  The two gangs are known to law enforcement as having a violent feud between them and have had retaliatory shootings in the past. While at the convenience store, members of the rival gang were parked at a gas pump. Three subjects, including Berreman, opened fire on the victim group through a fence. Berreman and his accomplices ran away.  During the barrage of gunfire, a bullet struck and killed the victim, Mr. Obed, an innocent bystander.

Detectives with the Reno Police Department and Regional Gang Unit located Berreman the next day coming out of his apartment.  He took off on foot, tossed the handgun he used during the shooting, and fled from law enforcement who eventually caught him after a foot pursuit.  In an interview with police, Berreman admitted to driving to the convenience shooting at the rival gang, unloading an entire magazine, and fleeing. 

During sentencing, Deputy District Attorney Jeff Hoppe argued for life in prison for the shooting, citing the danger Berreman represents to the community as shown by his participation in the deadly ambush where he “emptied his gun” that resulted in the death of an innocent bystander.

Evidence was also presented relating to Berreman’s violent character and his association with a violent gang in which he supplied automatic firearms to fellow gang members. The Honorable Judge Barry Breslow presided and imposed the sentence.
