Nevada Community Wildfire Risk and Hazard Assessment Project

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF), through the National Fire Plan, provided funding for a statewide project to assess wildland fire threat levels to the communities within Nevada and recommend mitigating measures for each community. Resource Concepts of Carson City was contracted to complete this process and submit this assessment on a countywide basis to each County Commission for acceptance through the Nevada Fire Safe Council.
The Washoe County Assessment is one of the most complex assessments in the state containing mitigation for 31 communities. This assessment meets the requirements of a Community Wildfire Protection Plan as required in the Healthy Forest Restoration Act of 2003 (HFRA)
The Board of County Commissioners has been fully briefed on the Washoe County Wildfire Risk and Hazard Assessment through a presentation and discussion that occurred on August 9, 2005. During this briefing several issues were presented that required editing of the assessment and further clarification in the plan before any implementation could occur. The fire services in Washoe County have committed to making all the necessary corrections and additions to the plan and concerns from Public Written comments and discussions with citizens have all been addressed in the current document. This broad based assessment does meet nationally developed criteria and is considered a first step in developing an in depth plan to address the wildland fire threat at the community level. The acceptance of the Assessment makes Nevada one of the first states to have completed and accepted all of its county plans.
We plan to collect input and provide updates over a period of approximately every six months to ensure that the assessment maintains currency.
