Improve Public Safety, Security and Health
On Saturday, October 13th the District Health Department partnered with numerous local agencies and organizations to offer nearly 2,300 free flu shots within 3.5 hours at a mass immunization exercise held at Reed High School and sponsored by a federal Homeland Security grant.
The annual Flood Expo will be held this year on November 7th from 2-7 p.m. at Rancho San Rafael. There are interactive booths planned to both entertain and education citizens about flood awareness. Visit www.floodawareness.com for more information.
Emergency Management staff organized a Deaf and Hard of Hearing emergency preparedness school day outreach held at the Regional Emergency Operations Center on October 12th. More than 100 deaf students from throughout Northern Nevada attended the event.
Preserve and Enhance Our Quality of Life
On Tuesday, October 23rd, Washoe County will be sharing its proposed update to the Regional Open Space and Natural Resource Management Plan with the public and providing an opportunity for input. This workshop will be held from 5 7
A new 1.5 million gallon water tank in the Hidden Valley area went on line this week. The tank augments the combined existing one million gallon water storage in two other Hidden Valley water tanks. Together, these three tanks will provide a continuous, reliable source of drinking water and provide water for fire protection to the residents of Hidden Valley.
Earlier this month, Facilities Management and Community Relations held an internal Conservation Fair and ENERGY STAR Change a Light Day which was held by nearly 250 people. The purpose was to promote a reduction in energy use by replacing incandescent bulbs in our homes with Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs).
Improve Regional Collaboration
The Nevada Public Health Association held its annual statewide public health conference in Verdi last week. Washoe County District Health Department staff held several key leadership roles in this event.
The Washoe County Telecommunications Department hosted the Public Safety Interoperable Communications (PSIC) grant investment meetings this week which were conducted by the Nevada Department of Emergency management and attended by over 30 representatives from state, rural and local governments. Discussions were held on potential grant applications for the upcoming Department of Homeland Securitys $12 million grant dedicated to improving statewide public safety interoperable communications.
Improve Government Efficiency and Financial Stability
Effective this month, Washoe County department can now electronically submit requests to fill vacant positions to the Countys Budget and HR Departments. This new paperless process reduces processing time by one week, eliminates the handling of paper and the cumbersome tracking of the manual process. More than 90% of the Countys job applicants are now using our on-line application system.
Provide Excellent Public Services
A newly designed, extensive training session for Citizen Advisory Board (CAB) officers will be on Wednesday, October 24th. The training is designed exclusively for CAB chairs to give them the tools they need to prepare for and effectively run their monthly CAB meetings.
The following day, October 25th, all CAB members as well as County staff and members of other County Boards and Commissions are invited to an Open Meeting Law Training Session.
The Countys Roads Department continues to visit all 16 Citizen Advisory Board meetings to inform them about the Regional Snow Plan and ask for citizens assistance in helping our crews keep the roads clear of snow this winter. Washoe Countys Annual Adoption Day Celebration program featuring the adoption of 32 children into new forever families was presented with first place in the 2007 Hometown Video Awards in the Making A Difference category. The award is sponsored by the Alliance for Community Media, and 1,100 nominations were received this year from throughout the country. November is National Adoption Day Awareness Month, and this years annual joint adoption celebration will be held on November 24th. Develop our Workforce
Gerold Dermid, a Health Educator in the District Health Department, has been appointed by the Governor to the first-ever Office of Minority Health Advisory Board where he will represent the health needs of the minority community of Northern Nevada.
