Improve Public Safety, Security and Health
Week-end fires scorch hundreds of acres in Washoe County
With fires still burning in South Lake Tahoe at this writing, the 2007 Summer Fire Season is off to a very dangerous start. Residents continue to be cautioned to make sure that they have adequate defensible space on their property, and construction and other crews are being asked to be particularly careful not to operate equipment or to discard cigarettes that may cause sparks in dry, grassy areas, especially in the afternoons when high winds pick up. Commercial businesses that cause fires can be held financially responsible for fire suppression efforts. In addition, the public is reminded that arson, which is the alleged cause of at least one week-end fire in the region, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Washoe County continues at this hour to provide emergency response support on the Angora Fire in Tahoe, and has been working with El Dorado County officials to provide additional assistance for response and recovery.

Water reserve in Lightning W reaches critical low point; residents meet challenge to conserve
As of Friday, June 22, water storage reaching lows not seen since 1988 prompted Washoe County Department of Water Resources to do a door-to-door emergency notice to customers of the Lightning W water service to discontinue outdoor water use through the week-end. The residents cooperated, and the water levels rebounded to safe levels. Normal twice a week summer watering schedules are being recommended in follow up.
