Board of Equalization

The Washoe County Board of Equalization is comprised of five members appointed by the Washoe County Commission (NRS 361.340). This Board is charged with hearing appeals filed by property owners who do not agree with the value placed on their property for tax purposes by the County Assessor (NAC 361.624). The County Board hearings are held from late-January through February of each year.

Board Members

James Covert
Chair

Mr. Covert holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from California State College at Long Beach and an MBA from Pepperdine University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969. He is a member of the Institute of Management Accountants and holds a Certified Management Accountant certificate. He spent most of his career in the Aerospace and Automotive industries and was on the management team that started Porsche Cars North America here in Reno. He is currently the Campus College Chair of the Undergraduate School of Business at the University of Phoenix.

Mr. Covert has served as a board member and Vice Chairman of the South Truckee Meadows General Improvement District and member and Chairman of the Washoe County Organizational Effectiveness Committee. He was appointed to the Washoe County Board of Equalization in 2007 and currently serves as its Chairman.

John Krolick
Vice Chair

John is the Broker/Owner of Alpine Realty International, a residential, commercial real estate, property management firm located in beautiful Incline Village, NV.

John has been in the real estate industry for over 21 years. Currently he is President-Elect for the Incline Village Board of Realtors and is a Director for the Nevada Association of Realtors.

He was appointed to the Washoe County Board of Equalization in 2005 and currently serves as its Vice Chairman.

John and his wife, Gail, reside in Incline Village, Nevada with their two daughters, Alexis and Tiffany.

Linda Woodland

My name is Linda Woodland and I have lived in Washoe County for 11 years. My husband Charles and I moved here after he retired from the Army having served 21 years. I have four children and four grandchildren. My background is in the Escrow/Title business. When I retired a few years ago, I decided to become active in my community. I serve as Secretary / Treasurer on the Sun Valley Citizens Advisory Board, I am serving my third term as President of the Optimist Club of Reno and I am a past Lt. Governor for Zone 8 of Optimist Pacific Central District. I still serve on the District staff. Most recently I was elected to serve as a Board Trustee of the Sun Valley General Improvement District and as President of the Sun Valley Landowner's/Resident's Association.

James Brown

I graduated from St. Elizabeth's High School in Oakland, CA. After graduation I signed with the San Francisco Giants and played for three years in their minor league baseball system. Subsequently I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkley.

I had a long career as an elected Union Labor Representative in the Bay Area. My main responsibilities were to represent members in grievance hearings, arbitrations, and contract negotiations.

Upon retiring in 2004 I moved to Reno and was elected as a board member of the Rancho San Rafael Home Owners Association on which I currently serve. I was appointed to the Washoe County Board of Equalization in 2008.

Thomas Krompetz

Mr. Krompetz holds a Masters degree in Public Policy and Administration from the University of Nevada, Reno where he graduated with honors. He is a member of the Political Science honor Society Pi Sigma Alpha. He also holds a Bachelors degree in Environmental Science from California State University, Sacramento and an Associates degree in Fire Science from Truckee Meadows Community College. He has been proudly employed with the City of Sparks Fire Department for 15 years and has vast experience in educating students in the fire science field at TMCC, the Washoe County Regional Training Facility and the UNR industrial fire school previously located in Stead, Nevada. He has been twice elected Secretary of the International Association of Firefighters, Local 1265 where he fought for equality of services and compensation for Sparks Firefighters.

Mr. Krompetz is a husband and the father of two children. He is very active with the parent faculty association at Caughlin Ranch Elementary School and was previously the chairperson for the Legislative Affairs Committee at Jesse Beck Elementary School.

He is an advocate of individual rights, equality for the citizens of Washoe County, and higher educational standards for the children of Northern Nevada.
