Welcome to the Arrowcreek Fire Station Website

Read on for more information on the new Arrowcreek Fire Station
The Sierra Fire and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection Districts' Board of Fire Commissioners are interested in feedback from all Washoe County residents on staffing of the new Arrowcreek fire station!
The future station will be located at the corner of Thomas Creek and Arrowcreek Parkway. The station will service the areas of Arrowcreek, Galena, Mt. Rose and South West Reno. The station is within the Sierra Fire Protection District service area.
Construction of the station is supported by federal grant funds. However, the  Board is interested to know the community's ideas for staffing and operation of the station. The question simply is .... How would you staff the Arrowcreek fire station?

September 28, 2009: Grant funding allocated by the Federal Emergency and Management Agency (FEMA) grant through American Resource and Recovery Act (ARRA) funds.

Project History

The new Arrowcreek Fire Station is funded by a $2.5 million Federal Emergency and Management Agency (FEMA) grant though the American Resource and Recovery Act (ARRA) funds. The funding was allocated in September 28, 2009 and accepted by the Sierra Fire Board of Fire Commissioners/Board of County Commissioners on May 25, 2010. The funds will be used to complete design permitting requirements, and, finally to construct the station.

Construction will occur over an eight month period. The grant requirement is to have the station completed within three years (September 2012) and provide regular and timely progress reports to FEMA. Construction could begin within one year with a possible completion date of November 2011.

The new Arrowcreek Fire Station is deemed necessary due to longer than average response times to the surrounding communities. The original development agreement for Arrowcreek in the mid 1990s called for the developer to donate property for the purpose of constructing a fire station.

Citizens have participated in the development of the new fire station for over two years. Previous attempts to fund staffing for a new station in the area include a ballot measure for a bond and tax override for building and staffing the station.  The measure was defeated by 158 votes in 2008. In 2009, a citizens group went to the board and asked to have the fire chief assist in developing options to build and staff the station.  Part of the citizen request included an analysis of the previous bond measure which viewed the election results by voter precincts. Precincts serviced by the future station approved the tax increase by 68%.

Considering the general local community support, in March 2009 the citizens group presented other options for the Board to consider building and staffing the station.  One of the options included seeking grant funds. As a result of the work of citizens and staff, in September 2009, the District received a $2.5 million dollar federal stimulus grant to construct the station. In June 2010 the Board approved acceptance of the grant with an interim staffing plan.

The District Board of Fire Commissioners (i.e, Washoe County Commission) seeks to continue the current citizen participation by facilitating community input to a permanent staffing solution for the new Arrowcreek Station.  Emergency support is a concern for all residents in Washoe County and the Board would like to hear from all residents on how they feel staffing of the fire station should be resolved.

Staff is hosting community forums to develop a list of potential staffing options developed by citizens and staff to be analyzed and finally reviewed by the Board of Fire Commissioners. In addition to the forums, citizens may submit their ideas by email at fire@washoecounty.us.

In addition to staffing the Arrowcreek Fire Station, the Board of County Commissioners, Sierra Fire and Truckee Meadows Boards' of Fire Commissioners are implementing appropriate recommendations addressed in the new Fire Services Master Plan. These independent processes are occurring simultaneously and support the overall goal to provide responsible, effective and safe emergency services to citizens in the unincorporated areas of Washoe County.
