Selected Profile
Profile: Katy Simon
Katy Simon serves as the County Manager for Washoe County, second-largest county in Nevada. As Chief Executive Officer of the County, she oversees a total budget of $800 million with 2,500+ employees. The county provides nationally recognized regional and urban services to a growing population of more than 400,000 residents.
Ms. Simon was appointed County Manager in 1998 after serving two years as Asst. County Manager for Finance and one year as Deputy County Manager. Prior to that, she was owner and principal consultant for Simon and Associates Management Consulting providing services both in the United States and internationally. Before establishing her firm, she served for seven years in various executive capacities at Washoe Health System (now known as Renown). She has taught at the University and Community College levels and is a frequent public speaker. She is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of California, and holds a master’s degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. She was featured as one of 20 people to watch in the new millennium by the Reno Gazette-Journal, and was named one of the ten most powerful women in the State of Nevada.
She serves on many non-profit and private boards both in the community and in her industry. She is one of approximately 1,000 accredited public managers throughout the country as designated by the International City and County Managers Association, the premier professional organization in the field of public administration. She serves on the Steering Committee for the ICMA Center for Performance Measurement, is the Western Regional Director for the National Association of County Administrators, and serves on the Board of the Alliance for Innovation which recently created a partnership with Arizona State University and ICMA to promote innovative thinking and best practices in the public administration field.
Ms. Simon is also a professional vocalist, and was selected as an Olympic Torchbearer in the 1996 Olympics. She was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area and has lived in the Reno/Tahoe area for nearly 35 years.
