Unlike the general public, libraries cannot purchase an e-book from Amazon or Audible and legally lend it to library patrons. Libraries must purchase specially-licensed digital content from intermediary companies. Some publishers do not license their titles for library lendings and as a result not all books are available for purchase by the library. Libraries are working to change the current state of copyright law, end-user license agreements, and the digital rights management protections put on the digital copies we buy so that you can access what you want from the library on the device you choose.
Can I return downloaded titles before the lending period expires?
Titles in EPUB, PDF, Kindle, and MP3 formats may be returned early although the steps are a little different between formats (see table below). At this time WMA format audiobooks may not be returned early.
| Format | Return titles using |
| EPUB or PDF downloaded to a desktop/laptop computer | Adobe Digital Editions |
| EPUB or PDF downloaded to a mobile device | Overdrive Media Console app |
| Kindle | Manage My Kindle at your Amazon account |
| MP3 downloaded to a desktop/laptop computer | Overdrive Media Console |
| MP3 downloaded to a mobile device | Overdrive Media Console app |
| WMA | cannot be returned early |
For more detailed instructions on returning digital titles visit Overdrive Help.
Can I renew downloaded titles?
At this time, downloaded titles cannot be renewed. If the title is not on hold for another patron you may check out the book again or place a hold on the item if it is unavailable.
Can I donate digital titles to the library?
Publisher and vendor restrictions prevent the library from accepting donations of digital titles purchased by patrons. However, the library can accept a cash donation that specifies the purchase of a particular digital title or format. For more about donating to the library by visiting our Support/Volunteer page.
