Fire agencies contained a 48-acre blaze in the Palomino area today at 1:45 p.m. Ignited by discharge of a firearm, the fire started around 10 a.m. this morning and consumed 38 acres of private land and 11 acres of public land.

The Board of Washoe County Commissioners and its largest employee bargaining unit, the Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA), approved a formal labor agreement Tuesday covering the current and previous fiscal years, providing more than $2.5 million in wage and benefit savings to taxpayers between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2013.

Since July 1, new Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District has responded to 533 calls including responses to 40 fires in Northern Nevada. Standing up the new fire district involved 24 career and volunteer stations, selecting and equipping and 105 career and 180 volunteer fire fighters and support staff, and required a significant amount of effort and commitment by more than a dozen departments at Washoe County.

Even as the Caughlin and Washoe Fires raged, emergency crews and local Burn Area Emergency Rehabilitation (BAER) teams were at the scene, working to provide vital erosion control and protection of the community’s water resources. The flames have since been extinguished, but the combined agency efforts of recovery professionals still continue.
