Reno, Nevada. January 18, 2011. Washoe County Commissioners will interview 12 candidates who have applied to fill the vacancy left by long-time State Senator Bill Raggio in District 3 upon his resignation effective January 15th. The eligible candidates are:

Greg Brower
James Nadeau
Patricia Cafferata
Dan Reaser
Barbara Smith Campbell
Ken Santor
James Galloway
Tim D. Smith
Toni Harsh
Claudia VanLydegraf
Derrick Johnson
Michael Weber

Kevin Christensen had submitted his letter of interest, but does not reside within State Senate District 3 and is, therefore, ineligible. Per state statute, all candidates must be of the same political party as the incumbent (Republican in this case), and must actually live in the same Senate District (District 3 in this case). Submitted letters of interest for each candidate is attached.

To ensure a fair and open process, the County Commission decided last week they would interview each candidate in a public meeting asking each of them a series of the same questions. The candidates will be interviewed alphabetically, and will remain sequestered in a separate room until their turn. It is anticipated that the questioning of each candidate will take 15-20 minutes. After all candidates have been interviewed, it is anticipated the Board will discuss their choices and the process for determining a successful candidate. The Commission has said it will appoint a successor today.
