Sierra Fire Protection District
SFPD
The Sierra Fire Protection District was formed by the Washoe County commission from the fire district that was formerly administered for Washoe County by the Nevada Division of Forestry, and began operations July 1, 2006. The district is comprised of the former NDF personnel and is equipped with apparatus and other equipment that was purchased by the state utilizing Washoe County funds specifically for use within that former district. All structural firefighting, rescue, EMS, and wildland fire services will be provided by the Sierra Fire Protection District.
The Sierra Fire Protection District currently has stations located in the suburbs of Reno including Galena, West Washoe Valley, and Verdi. It is expected that the community will have closer control of their fire services than existed prior to this transition.
Washoe County will not be recruiting for Sierra Fire Protection District seasonal fuels management crews. In a cooperative agreement signed in April 2011, all seasonal employees will be recruited and employed by the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLT). Please refer to the NLT website for more information.
