Mass Casualty Incident
What is a Mass Casualty Incident?
Any time an accident or disease occurs that leaves many people ill or injured, we would call it a mass casualty incident (MCI).
The health department works with our local hospitals and the Red Cross to track injured or ill patients so families can find out where their loved ones are. Get more information on the District Board of Health's Multi-Casualty Incident Plan for our area.
Mass Casualty Incidents can be cause by natural disasters...
- Flood
- Earthquake
- Wildfire
All could lead to injuries, people being displaced from their homes, and people not having access to food, water and medications.

Natural disasters generally do not lead to infectious disease epidemics unless a disease was already causing a problem in the area.
Or by accidental disasters and/or intentional disasters (terrorist attacks)
For example:- Explosion
- Chemical Spill
- Plane Crash
- Chemical Emergencies (e.g., Sarin gas release)
- Radiological Emergencies (e.g., Dirty Bomb)
