Washoe County Budget At A Glance

Photo of money and financial charts

Washoe County government’s budget for the past several years has been reflective of the national and local economy.  Since the County relies on both property tax and sales tax revenues for nearly 80% of its total general fund revenues, a steady decline in both these sources have had serious consequences on our budget and our ability to provide public services.

We have reduced spending by more than $154 million over the last five years.  The 2011-12 budget is about 21% less than in just five years ago. Employees have forgone cost-of-living increases for the past four years in order to capture savings, as well as taken wage reductions and increased their contributions to health care costs.  The County’s workforce has been reduced by 769 positions—about 17% of our total workforce.  Our current budget is at 2005 levels with staffing at 2004 or earlier levels.
