Collections Division
(Fax 775-328-6120)
The Collections Division works to capture funds owed to Washoe County by providing a collection program for County departments and agencies to which fees, fines, or charges are due. They serve as either the first point of contact on payments due or they perform collection activity when the debt becomes past due. This division of the Comptroller's Office typically secures more than $5 million in debt owed to the County annually.
Pursuant to Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 354.255 and 244.207, and Washoe County Code 15.191 assigning the Comptroller to oversee the centralized billing and collection of money owed or due the County, the Washoe County Board of Commissioners approved the establishment of the Washoe County Billing, Receivables and Debt Collection Policy on February 28, 2012. This Policy states, in part, "To the extent allowed by law, a collectable delinquent account submitted to the Comptroller for collection shall be assessed interest and fees." The table shown below identifies the fees and rates of interest that will be assessed such accounts.
Fees and Interest Assessed on Delinquent Accounts
One-time charge for collection $25.00 Added monthly fee for a payment plan $2.00 Interest on the outstanding delinquent balance 5.25%* *The interest rate is presented as an annual rate and based on prime plus 2%, but compounded daily for application to the total amount owed. The rate is reset on the first day of each calendar quarter, and will be based on the rate as reported in the Wall Street Journal.
