Membership Information

Membership categories for citizen advisory boards are selected with the intent to provide representation from a broad cross-section of the community. The idea is to ensure that all major viewpoints are examined, and that the citizen advisory board is not dominated by any faction or special interest group.

Members are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners for staggered two-year terms beginning July 1. Appointments are made from a list of persons who have submitted applications within the past year. Generally, an advertisement for applicants is placed in the local newspapers at lease once a year, but an application may be submitted anytime. Applications are available from the Department of Community Development. Citizen advisory board members may make recommendations to the Commissioners concerning appointments.

It is the general policy of the Board of County Commissioners that citizen advisory board members be appointed for one two-year term to ensure the fullest participation by a broad range of citizens in a neighborhood. However, considerations of continuity may allow for reappointment of a member to a second or third consecutive term. In special cases, an additional term may be considered for an individual's appointment if there are no other qualified applicants. A member may not serve more than four consecutive terms on a citizen advisory board. If there are no acceptable applications for a position within a specific area of representation on a citizen advisory board, the Board of County Commissioners may change that position to an at-large position for one term. At the end of the term, the position reverts back to the original representation.
