Profile: Marsha Berkbigler

Commissioner Marsha Berkbigler represents Washoe County Commission District 1 which includes portions of west and southwest Truckee Meadows extending south along the eastern Sierras to include portions of the Tahoe Basin. A long time resident of Washoe County, Marsha brings her extensive background as a respected and influential government, business and community leader to Washoe County.

A respected legislative advocate at the federal, state and local level, Berkbigler understands that successful businesses and organizations must function in a regulated, compliance-driven and relationship-building environment. She has led crucial phases of lobbying and public relations action plans, as well as represented companies in multi-state legislation involving multiple lines of business.

Consistently selected to lead complex negotiations, Berkbigler has presented a respected professional image, earning cooperation at all business and government levels and delivering superior results under pressure. She has earned recognition for effective lobbying efforts and is known for her compelling public speaking and ability to clarify and resolve polarizing issues. Some examples include passage of landmark legislation for the mining industry while working Freeport-McMoRan Gold, represented mining concerns for multiple-state legislatures and negotiated compliance resolutions and legislation for telecommunications.

Berkbigler has developed relationships and built coalitions with state and national associations, legislators and their staff in multiple states, municipal governments, and state and federal agencies. Ms. Berkbigler was the District Director for a new congressman, establishing offices, hiring staff and handling his in-state constituent service. Relationship building and public relations were integral parts of Marsha’s skill set and made it easy to manage constituency services for the congressman while supervising a staff of 20.

Berkbigler opened and managed a government relation consulting business representing 10 statewide business associations and several nonprofit and educational groups. Ms. Berkbigler also represented regulatory issues on behalf of her clients before numerous state agencies. As a committed member of our community, Marsha has also served on numerous community boards and commissions including the Reno Sparks Chamber of Commerce, the TMCC Foundation and KNPB’s board of trustees

Berkbigler has a BA in Business Management from California Coast University. She also holds an AA - Paralegal degree from Reno Business College, with additional studies in Political Science and Government from Truckee Meadows College and the University of Nevada, Reno.
